Emy Pump FAQ: Use, Care & Compatibility

Because very few women know it, but during a feeding, there are actually several ejection reflexes. When expressing milk with an electric breast pump, it is therefore recommended to maximize the ejection reflexes during pumping. We often think, wrongly, that by increasing the intensity it will bring out more milk when in reality, you can trigger a new ejection reflex but by changing the mode.

To ensure efficient pumping, be sure to respect the following points

• use the right size breast shield for your breast
• correctly position your nipple in the center of the breast shield
• apply enough compression to the breast pump so that there is no gap between Emy Pump and your breast.

To maximize your milk supply, also make sure you get into a regular pumping routine. Try to stick to fixed pumping times and not skip sessions (this will signal to your body the need to produce milk consistently). By following these tips, you will optimally stimulate your breast milk production.

Emy Pump can be used in a seated or standing position. To install it, position your nipple in the center of the breast shield then install your breast pump in your bra. Emy Pump should be firmly pressed against your breast, with no space between the breast pump and your chest.

Using Emy Pump should be comfortable and not painful. To maximize your comfort, it is essential to choose a breast shield adapted to the size of your nipple and to adjust the intensity appropriately.

There are 6 different nipple shield sizes included with the portable Emy Pump.

The base shield of the pump measures 28 mm. Five additional nipple adapters are also provided with the Emy Pump to allow for size adjustments: 15 mm, 17 mm, 19 mm, 21 mm, and 24 mm.

To use them, simply attach the chosen adapter to the cavity of the main nipple shield. The adapters are optional; depending on your size, you may not need them. They provide the possibility to adjust the size if necessary, whether for using two different sizes for each breast or if your size changes during breastfeeding.

Measure the size of your nipple at rest. The appropriate shield is usually 1 to 2 mm larger than the measured diameter, so your nipple is centered and can move freely.

You can also try different nipple shield sizes to find the one that suits you best. Start with the smallest size and gradually increase until you find the most comfortable one. A shield that is too small may cause irritation or pain during pumping if your nipple rubs against the side of the adapter. Conversely, a shield that is too large may cause discomfort or milk leakage.

The required nipple shield size may change over the course of your breastfeeding and may also differ from one breast to the other. Don’t hesitate to get support from a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist. They can help you identify the most suitable shield size for your breast and give advice for comfortable use of the Emy Pump.

A nipple shield that fits your nipple size properly is essential for effective milk expression.

The shape of your breasts and nipples can differ between your left and right breast. While it is possible that your nipples are the same size on both sides, to maximize your chances and optimize your pumping, always (re)measure both nipples carefully!

A good breast shield size is essential for efficient and comfortable milk expression. This is why you need to remeasure the size of your nipples after a few months. Because in fact, it will evolve over time and as your milky adventure progresses. We know, for example, that the volume of the nipple sometimes tends to decrease over time. Therefore, it is completely normal to change breast shield size during breastfeeding. When you choose your breast pump, the ideal is to opt for a model that provides several different sizes of breast shields like the Emy Pump breast pump which includes 6 different sizes ranging from 15 to 28 mm!

If during pumping part of your areola is drawn into the shield and rubs against the walls, it is likely that the nipple shield is too large.

Pain, redness, or irritation during or after pumping can also be a sign that your nipple shield is too big. Additionally, if you feel that you are not expressing enough milk, this may also be due to an improper fit of the nipple shield. Try pumping with a smaller size.

If your nipple shield is too large, it compresses the milk ducts near the nipple and prevents efficient milk ejection. When milk is not properly expressed and remains in the breast, it sends a signal to your body and brain to reduce milk production.

If during pumping your nipple rubs against the walls of the tunnel, the size of your nipple shield is very likely too small. In this case, we recommend trying a larger nipple shield.

Using a nipple shield that is too small can compress the milk ducts located under the areola, making milk flow difficult and reducing pumping efficiency. Additionally, friction between the nipple and the shield walls can cause breastfeeding discomfort, such as cracks or soreness.

If the Emy Pump breast pump has no suction, check the following points:

• The valve is missing or damaged
• The diaphragm is missing or damaged

> Reassemble the pump by adding the missing parts or replacing the damaged part

• The connector and diaphragm are not properly positioned or assembled with the collection cup

> Reassemble the pump by pressing the connector and diaphragm firmly against the collection cup

Several reasons may explain why the suction of the Emy Pump is too weak:

• The components are wet : dry all components
• The components are not properly assembled : check that all components are correctly positioned and assembled
• The battery does not have enough power : charge the breast pump for 180 minutes
• The nipple shield is not properly sealed with the collection cup : reposition the nipple shield correctly, ensuring it is fully sealed with the collection cup (no gaps)
• The nipple shield is not pressed enough against the breast : check that the nipple shield is properly positioned and pressed

Have you followed the following charging protocol?

• I charged the breast pump for at least three hours
• I used the cable provided with the case
• I used at least two power adapters and two different wall outlets.
• I tested charging via USB directly on a computer

Please try charging using different outlets and in different ways. We have already found that some power adapters are not powerful enough or defective and do not allow the pump to charge properly. It is also possible that the wall outlet you are using is defective or perhaps too old.

Try charging Emy Pump for three hours: the full charge indicator blinks on the screen to show charging. When the pump is fully charged, the indicator stops blinking and remains steady. You can find all our tips for charging your breast pump in this video.

Normally your pumping with Emy Pump should allow you to collect the same quantity as with a corded breast pump. If you wish, here are some tips you can try to improve your performance:

- check with our guide that you are using the correct size breast shield. It may be different from the size you use with a wired breast pump because the shape and material of the breast shields is not the same. This is a crucial element to ensure good milk extraction efficiency.

- check theassembly and that all parts are firmly seated to avoid air leaks which can reduce the performance of the breast pump

- try to compress a little more the breast pump in your bra, if you manage to tighten your strap as much as possible so that it is well placed against your chest

- sometimes differences in sucking rhythm or cycle length can disrupt expression. Try changing the modes: there is a first faster phase to trigger the ejection of milk (Massage or Stimulation mode) then a slower phase when the milk flows (Expression mode). As soon as you feel that your milk production is slowing down (or every 5 minutes), you can return to massage or stimulation mode for 2 minutes to trigger a new milk flow.

- you can also try pumping simultaneously with your wired breast pump on one breast and Emy Pump on the other and alternating for several sessions to see if you can get better stimulation. While you get your body used to it, you can also start pumping with the wired breast pump for a few minutes then use Emy Pump to continue pumping and gradually move from one breast pump to another, more and more quickly. Or vice versa, start with Emy Pump then finish with the wired breast pump if necessary to empty your breast.

If you have milk leaking from the collector:

• Check that the assembly of the diaphragm, connector and breast shield is tight and that the closing cap is securely closed.
• During pumping, keep the ventilation opening upwards and do not exceed the maximum milk capacity.

Emy Pump breast shields are quite short and may not be suitable for elastic nipples.
