As you probably know, the practice of yoga is known and recognized for its various benefits. Whether to relax, tone up or gain flexibility. But did you know that yoga also allows you to strengthen your perineum ? So we wanted to know more! We had the chance to discuss it with Sabrina Lubas, a yoga teacher in Paris, to find out more about this practice which could help even more women to tone their perineum and above all to become aware of it!
But first of all, who is Sabrina aka @bluetigeryoga?
Sabrina has been a yoga teacher since 2016. Trained in India in different practices, she has done pre and postnatal yoga its specialties. She quickly developed an interest in everything directly or indirectly related to pregnancy. She then decided to provide support to pregnant women and young mothers through the practice of yoga.
Why practice prenatal yoga?
According to Sabrina, practicing yoga before and after giving birth allows you to recover more quickly and treat minor pregnancy-related ailments. After giving birth, yoga classes allow you to get back on your feet as a woman. As Sabrina points out, “after giving birth you can have a feeling of emptiness, the attention is on the baby while the mother also needs it, the hormones turn everything upside down”. These courses therefore allow all these women to recreate social bonds and to reclaim their body.
The benefits of prenatal yoga
- Yoga will allow the future mother to know her body well and become aware of it. The practice of yoga can also allow him to prepare for childbirth with complete peace of mind thanks to the flexibility exercises which will allow you to work on the opening of the pelvis and muscle tone.
- Prenatal yoga will also be able to “cure” pregnancy ailments. For example, certain exercises will help limit constipation problems, acid reflux, sleep problems or even back pain.
- Another fundamental aspect of prenatal yoga is breathing work. During childbirth, the body needs oxygen, both for the baby (who needs energy to carry out all the work of descent into the pelvis and to be born) and for the mother, who needs to recover well throughout labor. The advantage of having a teacher specialized in prenatal yoga is that he or she will be able to teach the future mother the correct breathing. Sabrina therefore teaches her students the right breathing, which allows them to perform a productive push while preserving the pelvic muscles at the time of birth.
- And as we keep saying, a healthy perineum allows you to have good posture and limit back pain, of boost your sex life and above all to avoid urinary leakage accidents !
Postnatal yoga: the key to a great perineum!
It is recommended to begin postpartum perineal rehabilitation 6 to 8 weeks after giving birth with a midwife or physiotherapist. However, it is possible to start postnatal yoga well before, as soon as the baby is born! As Sabrina explains “ I invite young mothers to come with their babies to start making work their perineum in a very delicate way thanks to hypopressive gymnastics“. Postnatal yoga will also allow women to reclaim their bodies which have undergone many upheavals. It is an intimate moment of listening during which women can talk and exchange. But Sabrina recognizes that postnatal yoga remains a little-known practice.
The main idea in postnatal is therefore to reclaim your body but also to reposition the organs while delicately starting with breathing exercises to rework your perineum. Despite everything, this absolutely does not exempt from do rehabilitation !
The final word
“The body needs time to recover. After being able to observe so many pregnancies, I can say that each woman is unique and different. They must feel confident and cared for by helping and supporting each other.”
